The prominent Scottish political commentator Iain Macwhirter has been elected Rector by the students and staff of the University of Edinburgh:

Kevin Dunion OBE will now act as the convener of the Scottish Rectors' Group. The group continues to meet regularly and consult with Higher Education policy makers, lobby groups and university officials.

The Scottish Rectors' Group attracted significant press attention as it criticised the Interim Report of the Joint Future Thinking Taskforce on Universities:
